Colonel Abrams isn't a Stage Name

It's his real name... Music is the Answer was Colonel's first hit. Message Behind the Door is a cool slow jam.

Tension - A Place Called Heaven

I grabbed this 12" right as I was leaving a record store. It was cheap and it read "M.A.W. - Hot for You." I try to collect all Masters at Work stuff, so I grabbed it. It was a white label (pictured above). When I got it home I realized it wasn't M.A.W. at all, so with a little google research I realized it was "A Place Called Heaven" by Tension (Lenny Fontana & Michael Paternostro).
Because it's a white label, I'm not sure what the songs are really. I think it is:
A1 A Place Called Heaven (Downtown Vibe Mix)
A2 A Place Called Heaven (Mental Groove)
B1 A Place Called Heaven (Uptown Club Mix)
B2 A Place Called Heaven (Down Under Dub)
but it may be one of these discs (doubt it):
A1 A Place Called Heaven (Fire Island Mix) 7.28
Remix - Fire Island
A2 A Place Called Heaven (Junior Style Beats) 3.16
Remix - Heller & Farley
B1 A Place Called Heaven (Roach Motel Mix) 4.27
Remix - Roach Motel
B2 A Place Called Heaven (Original Mix) 7.17
C1 A Place Called Heaven (Joey Negro's Main Mix) 7.10
Remix - Joey Negro
C2 A Place Called Heaven (Joey's Bonus Beats) 2.51
Remix - Joey Negro
D1 A Place Called Heaven (Dub Groove) 7.06
D2 A Place Called Heaven (Clav Dub) 4.50
Either way, it is funky and right up my alley. If anyone knows which one it is, please let me know - Thanks.

Two Doors Down

I scooped this 12" a couple weeks ago at that dusty black hole in greenpoint. I had only heard Joe Thomas's single "Plato's Retreat," which was about an NYC gay sex club. This 12 doesn't disappoint either.
When I first listened to "Two Doors Down," I thought it sounded like a mix between "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton and The Jeffersons theme song. Lo and behold it's actually a cover of a Dolly Parton song - I'm getting good. The premise of the song is that there's a lady who is in her apartment feeling depressed and sad, and just two doors down, they are having a great party. Dolly sings it pretty middle-of-the-road, she sounds a little sad but not too much. Thomas recruited a few pointer sisters type singers who don't sound sad at all - in fact they sound happy as hell. Hilarious. Maybe they started the party already...
I like this type of disco record because it's so fun and out there. When DJs play disco in NY at least, this isn't the type of record they play though. The more deep sexy disco is popular - in otherwards, you proabably aren't going to hear this at any dfa parties or at working the knobs or something.
And the main reason for posting this? About halfway through there is a crazy bongo break with those party-type noises in the background which leads into Mr. Thomas kicking some ass on the jazz flute.
The B-side is a funky disco jazz instrumental which if you play out anywhere you will undoubtedly be approached by a douche who will say "hey this sounds like a 70's porno."

Wikka Wrap
Apparently the original song was a joke about how an english broadcaster named "whicker" talked or something, but all I know is that break is pretty ill and everyone recognizes this shit from that coolio song. That part was also cut up in the chorus of "Sing all Night" by Miss Melody from BDP, but you didn't know that...

Where were you when I needed you?
Here is the Timmy Regisford remix of Stevie Wonder's masterpiece "Superwoman." Timmy delivers a pretty straightforward & deep remix (kind of loses the beat around 2:50 tho and gets a little jumbled later on) which includes all parts of the song including the amazing second section. He is well known for being the DJ for the shelter parties and working for radio and as an A&R in the 80's as well. The dub is particularly interesting.
The original may be my favorite Stevie Wonder song.
